Measles cases are on the rise in the U.S. and worldwide, and the first case in Vermont was reported this week. Measles is one of the most contagious and dangerous viruses – it’s not just a rash! Between 1 and 3 of every 1,000 cases in children are fatal as a result of respiratory and neurologic complications; children younger than five years old are most at risk. The best way to protect your family against serious illness is with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. MMR is safe and effective. Two doses of MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93% effective. Check with your primary care provider to make sure your family is up-to-date, especially if you plan to travel outside of the U.S. Schedule required vaccines today!
