Text Box: 1700's - 1800's                                       Black people in Africa were kidnapped and brought to America to be slaves to work in the fields.

 

 

 

Text Box:  1765 - Civil War                                                Northern States fought against the Southern States.  The North won.  President Lincoln made slavery illegal.
 
 

 

Text Box: 1896 -    Plessy vs. Ferguson                                   The Supreme Court said segregation is legal in schools, movies, restaurants; if the quality is equal.
Text Box: 1865 - 1895  Segregation                           Black people are free, but rarely treated as equals to whites in the South as well as many parts of the North

 

 

 

 

 

Text Box: 1947 - Jackie Robinson                            First black baseball player to play in all-white professional baseball league.   He was a Brooklyn Dodger.

 

 

 

Text Box: 1954 -      Brown vs. Board of Education                Supreme Court rules segregation in  schools is not legal.  Few schools in the South follow the new law.

Text Box: 1960 - Ruby Bridges   Ruby Bridges and 3 other elementary students integrate two public all-white schools in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Text Box: 1956 -   Bus Segregation Ends                                      Supreme Court rules segregation on Montgomery buses is against the law.
 
Text Box: 1955 - Civil Rights Movement Begins.  Rosa Parks is arrested for not giving up her seat to a white passenger.  Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott starts.  Blacks refuse to ride city buses.

 

 

 

 

Text Box: 1961 - Freedom Riders  Protest interstate bus riders attacked in Alabama testing bus desegregation laws in the South.  Their bus was fire bombed.
Text Box: 1960 - Lunch Counter Sit-ins                 4 black college students refuse to leave a "whites only" lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina.  They sit waiting to be served.
Text Box:        1957 - Little Rock Nine                9 black high school students go to an all-white school in Little Rock.  Federal troops protect them

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Text Box: 1963 - March on Washington                  250,000 people of all races join in a Civil Rights march in Washington, DC. King gives his I have a dream speech.

Text Box: 1963 - Birmingham Protests  Children, as young as 6yrs. old help march against segregation in  Birmingham, Alabama.  Protesters sprayed by fire hoses and attacked by police dogs.

 

 

 

 

Text Box: 1963 - Birmingham Church Bombing  4 young girls die in a Baptist Church bombing set off by the KKK in Birmingham, Alabama.

 

 

 

 

 

Text Box: 1964 -  Civil Rights Act                                 President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act that states that segregation, in all public areas, is against the law.

 

 

 

 

Text Box: 1967 - Thurgood Marshall             Thurgood Marshall is the first black to be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
